Now its time to find the best hair mask for your hair care routine.
We’ll admit it –– we’ve been guilty of depriving our hair care routine from time to time and skipping hair masks altogether. Often times, masks are used as a last resort to revive damaged hair that feels like it’s beyond the point of no return. The truth is that masks should be used much sooner than this as part of your hair care rotation on a regular basis, it can lock moisture into your hair and prevent damage before it starts.
While conditioner and shampoo are intended for daily use, masks or “masques” are meant to be applied every third wash or whenever intense conditioning is needed. Heat styling addicts –– listen up! As obsessed as we are with our flat irons and straighteners, long-term exposure can lead to dryness. To counteract this concern, some masks even contain ingredients like argan oil that work to penetrate hair fibers. Think of masks as way to hit the reset button on your hair and give it a chance to start over.
Making the most out of your mask comes down to the application process. Start by applying it to freshly washed and towel-dried hair. While hair is still damp, work the hair mask through it using a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly from the root to tip. Set a timer for five to 15 minutes to allow the product to absorb into the hair. Hot tip: After applying your hair mask from roots to end, soak a towel in very hot water, wring it out and wrap it turban-style for an at-home “hot towel treatment.(Although be careful if you are using Color Extend Blondage Express Anti Brass mask) To avoid product build-up, skip your normal conditioner and move straight to cleansing. Don’t forget to rinse the mask out with cold water to close the cuticle and impart shine. For a super luxe feel, consider applying your mask as an overnight treatment. By leaving it on while you catch up on beauty sleep, the mask has ample time to take effect.
One important factor to note is that there’s a time and a place for hair masks. Redken Artist Giovanni Giuntoli advises holding off on using a mask three to four days before a big event. “…If you plan to dress your hair up and plan to have any kind of volume or wave in your hair, I wouldn’t put the hair mask on within that three-day time frame because hair masks tend to really over condition the hair… the healthiness that [the mask] adds tends to be weighted, tends to make curls drop and tends to make the hair a little bit more slippery,” he explained. Save the hair masking for a self care Sunday when you don’t have any major plans and can set aside enough time to let the product work its magic.
The reality is that virtually anyone can benefit from a hair mask. Although your hair may seem like it’s not damaged and is relatively healthy, it’s still susceptible to seasonal changes, pollution and day-to-day wear and tear.
If the thought of including yet another product in your routine feels overwhelming, we’ve got you covered. Read on to figure out the best hair mask for you.
For dry tresses, try:
All Soft Heavy Cream, which is designed to help with softness and shine. It’s made with argan oil, a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree, native to Morocco. The molecules in argan oil are just the right size to penetrate each strand of your hair, treating dry, brittle, damaged hair with just what it needs to look, and feel, gorgeous.
For color-treated hair, try:
Color Extend Magnetic deep attraction mask, which can help provide vibrancy that lasts up to three washes. Thanks to their RCT Protein complex, the dual chamber formulas in our Mega Mask family offer a targeted delivery system that can help treat all three levels of the hair at the root, core and tip.
For frizz, try:
Even those with frizz-prone hair can benefit from a smoothing masking by using Frizz Dismiss. The intensive treatment can help provide humidity protection to make hair more manageable, hydrating frizzy locks with babassu oil from babassu palms native to the Amazon.
For blonde hair, try:
Protect your blonde hair color from any brassiness by using Color Extend Blondage Express Instant Anti-Brass hair mask, which neutralizes brass and yellow undertones. Blondage products are formulated with a Triple Acid Protein complex—amino, citric and maleic acids and wheat protein—that work together to combat these unwanted tones, all while strengthening your hair’s cuticles and keeping your artist’s perfect color work bright.
Remember, your hair is like a permanent crown that you wear on your head and caring for it is worth the effort. Once you find the perfect mask, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Not all hair products are created equal and this is especially true for men’s hair products. With so many options on the market, knowing the right combination of styling products is the key to nailing down your look. Often, men’s hair products get a bad rap for being too heavy or leaving hair prone to residue. Despite this common misconception, the truth is that if you take into account what kind of look you want and the texture that you’re aiming for, you can avoid finding yourself in a sticky situation. We spoke to Top UK Barber and owner of Haus of Sottung, Sid Sottung who clued us in on what men’s products you really should be using on your hair.
Laying Down The Foundation
Achieving the perfect look is all about the groundwork. To establish an ideal foundation, Sid recommends ensuring you use the right shampoo for your hair type, texture and also the look you are trying to achieve. “Getting the hair primed and ready acts as a strong foundation. I would highly recommend Redken Brews Mint shampoo for normal hair types, as it acts as the perfect primer and cleanses the hair and invigorates the scalp with an energizing mint fragrance”
Aiming for a more dapper style? Sid’s go to product for achieving a polished and refined look is the Redken Brews Wax Pomade. “It’s my absolute favourite hair wax to achieve the ultimate vintage shine and feel” Sid states. If you’re crunched for time and don’t have a chance to wet your hair, apply the Redken Brews Wax Pomade onto dry hair. Wax goes on really well with dry hair because it needs something to stick on…If the hair is too wet, the wax doesn’t gel and stick to the hair, so the product tends to stay more on your hands. To finish, keep polished styles in place Redken Brews Hairspray, spray at a distance and sculpt accordingly.
The perfect Men’s Hair product combination for achieving a casual, textured style would be the new Redken Brews Extra Clean Gel and Redken Brews Outplay Texture Pomade. Sid recommends to start off by priming the hair with the Redken Brews Extra Clean Gel and use a finger drying technique to add in the texture and to manipulate the hair into place. Redken Brews Extra Clean Gel is great for adding hold without a heavy product feel and creating a care free, casual finish. Perfect for people who want to maintain a natural ‘no product’ look. Sid then recommends applying a small amount of Redken Brews Outplay Texture Pomade to hair sparingly to ensure you are not putting too much product in. This helps create a nice undone texture with hold and movement.
If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to tame naturally oily hair, use a styling product that has a matte finish. Sid’s go to hair pomade is Redken Brews Maneuver Cream Pomade. “The Redken Brews Maneuver cream pomade is such a versatile product, which I like to use for blow drying as well as finishing to create control with a matte, smooth finish”. New Redken Brews Thickening Pomade is perfect for thinning hair types as it instantly gives the effect of fuller hair with a natural looking matte finish. “Redken Brews Thickening Pomade is an amazing product that can be used as a 2 in 1 primer and finisher” – Sid States. If you are worried about your hair looking a little thin this is a great go to styling product! Work into damp or dry hair and blow dry in.
WHAT IS CLOUD HAIR?
‘Colour Clouds’ is the name given to a hair colouring technique that was created by Redken Global Creative Colour Director, Josh Wood backstage at Mary Katrantzou’s AW19 show. The technique is a combination of intense colour that blurs and blends out to the palest colour on the edges. This technique is perfect for those with a lighter base – the darker blondes through to those that are platinum.
The hair colour was debuted on 20 models as part of Mary Katrantzou’s stunning FW19 collection, showcased at London Fashion Week. The bespoke hairpieces were hand-painted and perfected by Josh Wood and his creative team in his Holland Park Atelier over five days using Redken City Beats mixed to make the unique tones.
“Mary has sectioned her collection into four worlds – each representing an aspect of the four elements; earth, wind, fire, and water. We’ve created two patterned hair techniques; ‘colour clouds’ and ‘horizon colour’ to work alongside and enhance her creative vision”, says Wood “‘Colour clouds’ is a combination of intense colour that blurs and blends out to the palest colour on the edges. These pieces were added to the models that have a light hair base – the dark blondes through to the platinum. For the darker haired models, ‘horizon colour’ pieces were inserted into their crown and hairline. The extensions are saturated at the roots – in ink, emerald green, or purple violet – and faded out in reverse ombré to a paler end of hair.”
For those with darker hair, the technique ‘Horizon’ was created. Hair is saturated at the root in greens, violets and faded our in reverse ombré to a paler end of the hair. The resulting palette is a variation of seafoam, morning dew, sky blue, cracked earth, sunset coral and pink ‘Colour Clouds’ and ‘Horizon’ were created using Redken City Beats colour exclusively. This range of semi-permanent colours has 14 stay-true hues that let you unleash your boldest look. No-mess cream formula for easy application and long-lasting semi-permanent results.

He’s the down to earth lad from the Lake District whose career has sky rocketed. Award winning The Social salon owner and men’s hairdressing authority, Ky Wilson talks to us about his career highlight, men’s grooming and why he loves a Brew!
What has been your career highlight?
This has to be creating The Social brand and the culture around it. Years of bringing my ideas all together and now it’s incredible watching everything evolve to what it’s becoming.
The social is an Innovative salon concepts located off grid in London and the Lake District. Both warehouse locations in situ with other independent businesses ensuring every aspect is social.
The Social is at the forefront of changing how the hair industry thinks. Creating a global lifestyle studio in true collaborative fashion, based in London and encouraging the flexible work ethos of the “freelancer” community. Whether you’re a hairdresser or on of our client, we embrace your sporadic movements and let you take control of your own time, creativity and opportunities.
Who are your idols?
Anyone with a story! If you listen more you'll hear it all! I become inspired by all these different elements over time and take bits from all industries and ways of life implementing them into mine. Hair isn't just the focus when we work so closely with people, the people themselves are!
What do you love most about men’s hairdressing/barbering?
The best thing is that it’s always growing. I've met some of the raddest humans through this job and it pushes myself to progress in new direction. I love the connection that hairdressing brings between people. it’s pretty special.
If you could give a young barber/hairdresser starting out one piece of advice, what would it be?
One cut at a time. Stay focused and strive in just doing you. The industry is built on so many different opinions, so let’s make yours heard.
What do you like most about working with the Redken Brews Range?
Finding a global men’s range with the reliability and performance of Redken Brews is essential to my day to day life. Whether that’s for myself styling and shaving at home or to lock in my finished styles for a big campaign.
Do you have any hints or tips for men’s grooming/styling?
For me Redken Brews Stand Tough Extreme Gel is a clear winner when taking into consideration the versatility of the product. Applying a small amount of Stand Tough Extreme Gel into damp hair and blow drying in gives you this incredible pliable base texture without flaking. Simply finish off with any of the brews pomades depending on the end result you are after. My favourite has to be the Redken Brews Cream Pomade. It’s perfect if you want to cut back on the shine and keep things casual.
Make sure you prep your skin with steam prior to shaving to prevent any ingrowing hairs or razor rash. Lather on the Redken Brews Shave Cream and glide over the razor. It’s amazing at allowing you to get super close without any nicks! Finish with a cold rinse, dab dry and massage in the Redken Brews After Shave Balm for a smoothing, nourishing effect. It also smells like a dream!
The Redken Brews Hairspray (INSERT LINK TO HAIRSPRAY) is an amazing product for holding styles in place. Also if you spray the Redken Brews Hairspray from as far away as possible towards your hair it will create a much dryer texture but still with movement, preventing your hair from having a wet look finish.

Choosing a new hair colour is never an easy choice - from ash blonde, to beautiful chocolate brunettes or even trending hair colours like pastel pink. We asked our salon of the month, Gielly Green, London to share some of their top secrets on how you can find your perfect shade and find out what hair colour suits you best.
Why is it important to offer clients a personalised hair color consultation?
With every client that walks through the door, consultation is the key. Most clients find their hair colour inspiration from social media using apps such as Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr. However, as professional hair colourists we know some hair colour trends may not suit every skin tone or face shape.
It’s so important for hairdressers to educate their clients on whether a trending hair colour is possible on their hair type, how long it will take to achieve a new hair colour and how to maintain their new colour.

Pump it up, personalise it and perfect every clients colour with Shades EQ Kickers.
Yellow Kicker /Red Kicker/ Violet Kicker
How do you create a personalised colour to complement every client’s skin tone and eye colour?
Hair colour is so personal to each individual and there is so much more than just warm and cool tones. We always take into consideration the whole look and personality of a client, alongside their skin tone and eye colour, as well as their hair colour preferences.
For example, you may have a client who typically would be suited to cooler tones, however when you see the kinds of clothes they wear and the style she carries, you can see she is a rule breaker and she wouldn't suit ashier hair.
Bending the rules as a hair colourist is what keeps our work fresh and inspiring but is also so important and what will ensure that a client leaves feeling happy and confident in their hair colour.
What hair colour do you use to offer your clients a personalised hair color?
We always use Redken’s demi-permanent hair colour Shades EQ, its acidic formula helps maintain the condition of the hair while allowing clients to change their hair colour with the latest hair trends or seasons.
We’ve also started using Redken’s new Shades EQ Kickers to help personalise every client’s hair colour. Shades EQ Kickers are direct dye shades that can enhance existing hair colour for a more vibrant result or add tone different warm or cool reflects in the hair - they give us unlimited colour options to help create to perfect hair colour for every client.
Why does every colourist need direct dye shades like Shades EQ Kickers in their colour palette?
Direct dye hair colour gives hairdressers the freedom to be creative with their colour recipes and help them to create a bespoke look to their customers.
Shades EQ Kickers are amazing to use with their existing Shades EQ palette or they can be used on their own to give that pop of colour for a more adventurous client. They give us the ultimate creative freedom to achieve any shade.
We first saw the Kickers being used in the US by celebrity hair colourist Tracey Cunningham on her loyal a-list clients - this is what sparked our interest in these new direct dye shades. As soon as we heard they were coming to UK, we couldn’t wait to experiment and try them out!
“Shades EQ Kickers are my secret weapon to being a true artist behind the chair. They allow me more control over the colour and creativity.”
Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist
Why is Shades EQ the perfect hair colour for every client?
Shades EQ is so easy to apply due to its liquid formula and gives our client’s amazing shine. The colour results are outstanding no matter the colour service! It is our go to in the salon to gloss, tone, correct, cover greys and refresh hair colour.
The technology protects the integrity of the hair leaving it in incredible condition. It is the perfect product for colour shy clients as acidic demi-permanent formula makes it a low commitment colour service.

One of the biggest hair trends in 2019 is ‘personalisation’ How do you help your clients find their one of a kind colour?
Our client's satisfaction is what we value most. The trend of 'personalisation' allows the client to receive a colour that is personal to them, that perfectly suits their skin tone, face shape, hair type and hair length. Not only does it have to suit them, but it has to be something they love and feel confident in having. We identify a client’s perfectly personalised colour by basing it on their skin tone, asking them about colours they tend to wear - specifically whether they lean towards cooler or warmer tones, and we also assess the hair and consider the hair history, as we want our clients' hair to be healthy and strong. 2019 is definitely all about healthy strong shiny hair! There are some cases in which we feel that the hair may not be strong enough to be a certain colour, platinum blonde for example, and this would be due to a history of bleach, colour and heat treatments, resulting in dry and damaged hair. In cases such as these, we do our best to adapt the circumstances and find a colour that the client will love, whilst improving their hair’s condition with at home products such as the Redken Extreme range and getting their hair to a place where they can go on to try more colours in the future.

What service would you suggest for someone trying colour for the first time?
It is totally dependent on the client! A client's personality, age, budget, natural colour and the time they have for upkeep and maintenance are all factors one has to consider before doing a colour done. A lot of the time we suggest something simple like just getting their roots or highlights done as, whilst these services aren't necessarily all that adventurous, they can really change ones’ appearance and a lot of clients identify new found confidence after they get even minor colour treatments. That said, if a client is busier and wants a more long - lasting colour, we would recommend balayage as the style has a regrowth time of 3-6 months and is extremely versatile and easy to maintain.
Balayage is no longer just about blondes, what do you think is next for this technique in 2019?
Balayage is an amazing colour technique not only due to the natural look, but the long regrowth time makes it ideal for busy clients who want gorgeous and trendy hair. We think of balayage as being predominantly blonde, but due to the innumerable benefits of this technique, we believe that it will start to be used with many different colours in 2019. We would love to see some rich copper tones on chocolate brown hair, we think the combination of shades would be stunning. We also love the idea of a rose-gold balayage! We believe 2019 is going to be a year of creativity, and stylists and clients alike will begin to be much more adventurous with colour and technique, so frankly we can't wait to see where balayage goes next, as there really aren't any limits!
What are the benefits of using liquid colour on your clients?
Redken Color Gels lacquers are brilliant. They make application easy and swift and the full range is fully intermixable with the Redken SEQ color range. They not only make the hair look and feel amazing and glossy, but they save our stylists so much time, meaning more wonderful clients can pop in per day!

It’s time to wrap up on 2018 and to reflect on the color choices we made in 2018. From Balayage to Grombre, we have a wrap up of the hottest trends and the color trends we are glad to leave in 2018. Chris from Mayfair’s One2One salon gives us an insight into what it’s like for a colorist creating these colors and his favourite 2018 trends.
What were the biggest hair trends of 2018?
In 2018 we saw a multitude of stunning hair trends rise and fall, but for us beach waves are the incontestable winner. Clients have seemed to love the effortless chic beach waves lends them, and the style is immensely versatile; we have seen it look gorgeous on so many different lengths, cuts and colors that we really can't think of a bigger trend this year. Redken’s Beach Envy Waves range is the perfect partner to this style for that effortless waves look.

What celebrities had the best color in 2018?
Khloe Kardashian killed it this year, hair - wise. Whether she was rocking a short textured bob or her signature long waves, she looked flawless. Her color was stunning, we think blonde is definitely for her, and her roots being slightly darker gave her hair a balayage effect that not only was super on trend this year, but looked lush no matter what she wore or how it was styled.
What were clients asking for most in the salon?
Balayage! Balayage has seen a dramatic rise to fame and popularity in recent years, and we totally understand why! The name comes from the French 'balayage' meaning sweeping, and refers to the method of essentially sweeping color on to the hair from the bottom to the top to create a natural, sun-kissed look. Unlike foil highlights, balayage has a long regrowth time of about 3 - 6 months making it ideal for clients who want amazing hair but don't have the time to come into the salon every 6 weeks. It’s easy to style, low maintenance and looks beautiful so we really can’t get enough of it!

What were the craziest colors asked for in the salon in 2018?
When the Redken City Beats line first got introduced in our salon, it was an exciting time, as they were the first Redken direct dyes that we had in. These dyes also allowed our team to be even more innovative and creative with color, and clients and stylists alike really enjoyed the new range of bright tones and hues available to them. I think the 'craziest' one we have seen this year was a rainbow inspired creation using the red, green, blue and yellow color.

What color trends from 2018 are you glad to be leaving in 2018?
While we hate to say it, we are quite glad to see Grombre die down. Grombre happened at some point last year, and was essentially a trend in which women who had began greying decided to embrace their natural hair color, rejecting the antiquated notion that older women should militantly hide their greying hair. We loved the trend as a movement, and as a rejection of societal pressure on women to hide any signs of ageing, which has grown in recent years with the steady increase in 'anti-ageing' products found on the market. That said, the trend, while beautiful and empowering, damaged our profits as our clients stopped getting their color done every 6-8 weeks. Still, we loved the message behind the trend and believe that this mentality people seem to have that women must strive to appear as youthful as possible for as long as possible, is a changing one, aided by trends such as this. Try our face Color Extend Graydiant for natural and dyed silver/grey hair, it works wonders for combating the wiry texture and yellow tone.

Semi-Permanent color vs Permanent color?
Here at One2One hair we value our clients needs above all so the question of semi-permanent or permanent color really depends on the circumstance and the individual client's needs. Both have their pros and cons, and we explain these to our clients and aid them in deciding which to go for based on their own requirements. When comparing the two, semi-permanent color is ideal for some as its low maintenance and less of a long-term commitment, but it wears off in just about three weeks because it doesn't contain any chemicals such as ammonia or peroxide. Furthermore, it only gives 75% grey coverage compared to the 100% coverage permanent color gives. Permanent color, as well as covering 100% of greying hair, will not fade, but regrowth will need to be recolored often. Permanent colors or tints are mixed with the active ingredient hydrogen peroxide to create what are called oxidation dyes, allowing for permanence. There's not a definitive winner between the two, as the choice is very much down to the individual, and knowing this we help our clients decide which one to go for as we know coloring ones hair is a big step and we want our clients to feel satisfied, confident and comfortable.
What products were the most popular products offered to clients after a color service?
It’s pretty difficult to say which the favourite one has been as the great thing about Redken products is the range and versatility, meaning we use different products on every client depending on what they need. But, if we were to pick the most popular it would be the Redken Extreme range. We also love Color Extend Magnetics for colored hair and Color Extend Blondage for our blonde clients.
How many color services did you do in 2018
How many bottles of Shades EQ did you get through in 2018
It’s been a big year for us, we have been through over 2000 bottles.
How many rolls of foil did you get through in 2018

HOW TO THICKEN MY THINNING HAIR?
If your hair is thinning or showing signs of thinning, there are plenty of hairstyles and cuts you can consider that will trick the eye into thinking that you have a voluptuous head of hair. The right products for thinning hair will help too – sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners, thickening products like Redken Dense FX that are designed to swell the hair cuticle and leave it looking plumper as well as volumising styling products like Redken Guts 10 that will keep that extra body in place once you’ve got the oomph you’re after.
But that’s just half the story. How your hair is cut and styled will play a massive part in how thick and healthy it looks and feels too – get that right and your thinning hair will not only become easier to manage but look far more full-bodied and thicker in the process. Rob Scott from Larry king says “Long hair isn’t always best for people suffering from thinning hair, It can exaggerate the flatness and make the hair look a little lifeless. In my experience fringes and shorter layers around the front can often strengthen a shape where the hair is often thinnest or weakest. For men shorter hairstyles are generally better for thinning hair as long fine hair can sometimes look a bit transparent or whispy. Having said all the above there really isn’t one rule that fits all and each case needs to be looked at individually really, at Larry King we offer our clients a fine hair remedy in which our stylist will give you a personalised style and /or colour based on your own hair texture and recommend the perfect products to suit too”
COLLARBONE CUTS FOR THINNING HAIR
If you have long but fine hair chances are the light will easily be able to shine through it, especially if it’s blonde or fair. This automatically makes hair appear thinner but by getting some of the length cut off and choosing blunt ends, the structured block shape will instantly add the appearance of extra weight. The same goes for a blunt bob or mid-length cut and if you do choose a bob, consider getting it cut shorter at the back and longer at the front as graduated styles force the hair forward so it looks thicker. Don’t forget to use a smoothing product like Redken Align 12 on the ends for a glossy, chic finish that won’t see the hair fray or frizz.
LAYER-FREE LENGTH FOR THICKER LOOKING HAIR
There’s no denying choppy layers give hair swagger and movement but they’re not ideal if your hair is thinning. Ask your hairdresser to keep layers to a minimum and stick to the mid-lengths and ends - you want the hair closest to the scalp to remain as dense as possible. When it comes to styling the hair at home Larry King Redken UK style ambassador says “choosing the best styling formulas is important, sometimes thinning hair can just be finer so you'd want to avoid heavy, greasy product, but thinning hair can also mean fluff and wireyness, this is better dealt with using a thickening lotion like Redken Thickening Lotion 06 or a little mousse like Redken Full Effect 04 and blow drying out.
Try blasting your hair with a volumising spray like Redken Rootful 06 when it’s wet and add a texturiser through the layers once hair is dry. Try Redken Wind Blown 05 it helps to give the hair guts and add a tousled, deconstructed shape that conceals sections of fine thinning hair.
PARTING PLAYTIME FOR THICKER LOOKING ROOTS
Sounds simple and it is! Switching where your parting sits is a fast fix for thinning hair as it instantly adds lift from the root. Plus more volume means you give the appearance of extra hair – win win. Deep side parts are especially good for this as by bringing more hair across the top of your head you’re essentially creating extra ‘padding’ and pushing up what hair you do have. A volumising mousse like Redken Full Effect 04 is a must and if you notice your parting falling flat, reawaken it with a blast of dry shampoo like Redken Pillow Proof two day extender.
SWEEPING SIDE FRINGE
Side fringes are a great trick for disguising thinning hair or fine hair. For starters, they frame the face and draw attention to the eyes, distracting from any thin hair at the roots. Also, the chunk of hair needed to create a fringe gives the illusion of fuller and thicker hair. Rather than a block fringe, go for a soft, free-flowing sweep that falls into place naturally. Set with a natural hold hairspray like Redken Wind Blown 05.
WAVES THAT WOW
Texture is a sure-fire way to thicken, give guts and body to hair, whatever style, length or colour so if you don’t want to hotfoot it to the salon, reach for some curling tongs instead. A soft wave hides any gaps in the hair and makes it look instantly thicker. Keep them loose and brush them through with your fingers for a beachy finish. Remember to apply a bodifying mousse before drying – this will help the waves keep their shape and stop them from dropping.
Why would you want to cut off all of your hair if it’s fine and thinning already? Good question. But in actual fact, keeping it short and close to the scalp can bulk up barely-there hair and make your style appear thicker. This is where sections in varying lengths do work. For best effect, style your hair in a haphazard manner - messy and parting-free if possible – that way there will hardly be any of your scalp on show. And add a volumising dust like Redken Texture Powder Grip 03 or wax like Redken Texture Wax Blast 10 to your style. They have a knack for making hair look far thicker than it really is – clever!
TACTICAL TINTS TO THICKEN
Happy with your cut but still concerned your hair looks a bit spindly? Consider a colour appointment instead. The colouring process naturally swells and thickens the hair’s cuticles which is why a freshly done colour can make a massive difference in how XXL your style looks. Extra shine and gloss will say ‘healthy hair’ and a radiant, reflective tint that bounces the light away really does conjure up that smoke and mirrors effect – deflecting attention away from thin hair. Ask your colourist to run a strand test before going for a colour just to check its strength. If that's OK colour can actually make your hair look thicker. It's a good idea to go one shade darker than your natural tone for the best thickening colour” says Larry King.

Ways to stop a receding hairline
Male Hair Thinning: What It Is and What To Do
Guys, we know it’s not easy to admit that your barnet is not looking quite as strong as it once was, but burying your head in the proverbial isn’t going to make those strands magically appear. So let’s get informed and do something about it.
Firstly, let’s looks at why it’s happening.
Nothing but a number
Unfortunately getting older plays a huge part when it comes to your hair thinning and receding hairlines. “For the vast majority of people, hair thinning is something that is part of the natural ageing process,” says Head of Science & Communication for L’Oréal, Steve Shiel. “It results in both less hair density (fewer hairs) and less hair diameter (finer individual hairs).”
It’s a Family Affair
If Uncle Dave, your Dad and big bro have got a receding hair line then it’s not going to be that much of surprise when yours starts to fade too. “There is definitely a genetic component to this phenomenon as you can see similar patterns of hair thinning in families and it’s down to a complex combination of genetic factors,” explains Steven.
There’s a Pattern
Hair thinning in guys tends to follow a similar route. Either starting at the temples and moving backwards or beginning at the crown and spreading outwards. Whilst this may not sound like good news it means that scientists have been able to develop products that can help make hair look thicker and also help strengthen the hair to prevent further breakage.
All Shook Up
“Severe depravation of nutrients has been shown to lead to problems with hair growth,” says Steve. Meaning if you have recently made extreme changes to your lifestyle and diet, your hair could be paying the price.
Out of the Blue
Hair thinning can also occur unexpectedly, “in rare occasions individuals can experience sudden hair thinning which can be localised to just one place or spread more broadly. There are a number of medical reasons that could be behind your symptoms so in this case it’s important to get the right diagnosis from your doctor or a dermatologist to understand the best treatment options.” advises Steven.
Now you’re armed with the facts behind hair thinning and receding hairlines let’s look at how to tackle them. For this we’ve picked the brains of Redken Ambassador and co-founder of London salon, Lockonego, Jonny Long.
It’s Important to Talk
“Male hair thinning is talked about, but not in the right way. There’s a lot of ribbing and making fun about it, but it really affects people’s confidence so it’s time to start talking about how it makes you feel so that you can then start to take positive steps to doing something about it. Come into the salon and talk to your stylist about what options you have.” says Jonny Long.
Consultation is Key
“If your hair is thinning or your hair line is receding you’re going to need to change your cut to accommodate it. Don’t just ask for the same thing time and time again. Sit down with your stylist, tell them your concerns and brainstorm together on what new style will work with what’s going on with your hair and what styling and maintenance will fit into your every day lifestyle. And take imagery with you. This is a great way for a stylist to see what you want and what you like rather than having to interpret what you’re saying.”
All About The Cut
“The cut all depends on how comfortable you feel and what suits your lifestyle. There’s not one rule however if you decide to shave everything off, remember it will show everything off so that may or may not be the right look for you. Otherwise I would say the shorter the crop, the thicker your hair will look and it’s all about leaving certain areas to grow longer so you can then style them to conceal the areas where your hair is thinning.”
Shake Up Your Styling
“Choosing the right types of styling products is key for thinning hair. You don’t want to be using anything that makes your hair too supple, soft and meaning it will move around a lot. Instead choose products that add texture and give hair grip and hold. Redken Cerafill Maximize Dense FX treatment is a perfect prep product as it creates volume all the way down the hair shaft instantly making your hair look thicker. Spray it into towel-dried hair, it will make the hair feel slightly tacky so you can then move it into the style you want. Then fix it into place with Redken Brews Hairspray. Even on a really windy day, this product will keep your hair exactly where you want it to be!” If you are looking for a more styled look make sure to avoid waxes, pomades and gels as these can clump together and make hair thinning more obvious. Try a lighter product like Redken Brews Work Hard Molding Paste, this will give you texture and hold without pulling on the hair.

How can I make my hair roots thicker?
Whether your hair is thinning, fine or just lacks volume there are plenty of tricks to getting that all-important root lift because if your hair has height at the scalp it will immediately appear fuller and thicker. “Look for shampoos that add volume and body, and conditioners that are light and don't weigh it down too much. Mousse, thickening lotions, powders and dry shampoos are all great for adding depth.” Says Larry King Redken UK Style Ambassador.
Where to start to make roots thicker
The first place to start project root boost is in the shower. Use a volumising shampoo designed to plump and fill out gaps in the hair cuticle and you’ll immediately be creating the perfect base for better body. Then, dial down the conditioner focusing solely on the ends - adding too much on top will drag fine and thinning hair down, especially if it’s already vulnerable and weak. You could even try skipping the conditioner and use a leave-in mask or intensive conditioner once a week instead. One ten minute masking session will leave your hair nourished and in such good condition that you can forgo those daily conditioning sessions. Also, if hair is too conditioned it becomes so smooth and slippy which makes it tricky to create the texture you need for thicker-looking hair.
How to dry thinning hair
Once you’re out of the washing stages, don’t immediately reach for the towel and start rubbing your hair dry. Thinning, fine hair is more susceptible to breakage and fall out so being too aggressive won’t do you any favours. Pat and squeeze the towel around your hair instead (like you would if you were mopping up a spillage). This will draw out any extra moisture but save your strands at the same time.
How to style thinning hair for thicker roots
Next apply your styling products. Mousse is a must, try Redken Full Effect 04 Mousse, work some through from roots to ends and use your fingers to rake and spread it evenly through the hair so there’s minimal tugging. Volumising sprays like Redken Guts 10 and leave-in creams like Redken Extreme Anti Snap that strengthen the hair should also be applied now. Then apply Redken’s Dense FX treatment, it contains ingredients that expand the hair fibres and will help swell hair so by the time you’ve styled it you can expect hair that feels thicker to the touch as well as looking it.
Should I leave thinning hair to dry naturally to save my roots from heat damage?
When it comes to drying your hair, you might think that leaving it to dry naturally is the best option but heat can make a huge difference between flat roots and fat roots. Direct the nozzle of your hairdryer underneath your roots and use your fingers or a round-barrelled brush to gently pull hair upwards. Think of it as an education for your hair as you’re teaching it the direction in which you want it to go, so up rather than down. Without the lift, it will naturally lie straight on the scalp and that equals zero oomph.
It’s now that you can start to play with your parting too. Make a habit of not wearing it in the same place as flipping it from one side to another instantly gives a natural root lift and can transform how your hair sits. If it wants to fall back into its usual position, spritz it with some hairspray for extra hold or grip back a section using a Kirby grip and secure just behind your ear (but make sure you don’t pull the hair flat when you pin it). The same rule applies if you’re planning to wear your hair up. Once you’ve fastened your hair with a band, gently tug at it around the elastic so it looks looser and not so flat to your head.
What styling products can be used throughout the day when hair starts falling flat?
If your hair does need and extra nudge in the right direction during the day, dry shampoo and volumising dusts are your trusty sidekicks. Try Pillow Proof 2 day extender. Lightweight enough not to feel sticky or heavy in the hair but giving a poofiness that refreshes and adds guts to misbehaving hair, spray or shake the product into roots and use your fingers to tease it back into a tousled position.
Finally, when you’re using your styling products make sure you’re giving them enough time to settle before layering them up. The last thing you want is to overload your hair with mousse or styling products that then weigh your hair down.

How to hide postpartum hair loss
10 things to do if you have postpartum hair thinning?
1. Don’t Panic about hair thinning
Hair thinning after having a baby can be normal. As hormone levels settle down, the hair you should have shed as part of the natural hair cycle stays put when you’re pregnant, can fall out. It may feel as though you’re losing a lot of hair, but you are in fact shedding the hair you should have lost over the last nine months plus the hair you naturally lose.
Larry King Redken UK style ambassador “I have lots of clients in the salon who have had a baby and are worried about hair loss. So it's super important to do three things: 1) Don’t panic! Talk to your hairdresser openly. 2) Get a good cut and color, your hairdresser can advise you on what’s best for you. 3) Use at home products like Cerafill to promote hair regrowth.”
2. Carry On with your hair routine, but calm down on combing
There’s no need to avoid washing your hair or stop brushing it, as this won’t cause any damage. However, it’s important to avoid things that could cause further breakage and hair thinning. Steer clear of backcombing if you can as this puts a lot of stress on the hair and try to cut back on the frequency you use heated styling tools as the heat may cause hair to weaken.
3. Instant Fix
Postpartum, waiting for your hair to get back to where it was can feel like it’s taking ages, but there is something you can do for an instant visible difference. Redken Dense FX is a thickening treatment spray that contains Filloxane. This clever ingredient deposits along the hair shaft making thinning hair look thicker after just one use. Finally, some people find that colouring their hair can give it the appearance of looking fuller and thicker. “Ask your colourist to run a strand test before going for color just to check its strength. If that's OK have colour can actual make your hair look thicker. It's a good idea to go one shade darker than your natural tone for the best thickening colour” says Larry King Redken UK Style Ambassador
4.Get a Good Cut
A lot of women postpartum, especially because their hair is shedding and feeling and perhaps looking thinner than before, decide to chop it off, “It’s definitely something to chat to your stylist about. Going in for a good consultation is a great idea at this stage and your stylist can advise you on the best style for you at that time. One thing I will say though is make sure you stay true to yourself! There are enough changes to contend with when you have a baby so still feeling like you is key. Hair is a major part of our identity” says Larry King Redken UK Style Ambassador
5. Switch Up Your Styling
To encourage as much volume in your hair it’s worth rethinking the type of styling products you’re using. Mousse is a great way to lift thinning hair without weighing it down and putting any added pressure on. Try Redken Full Effect 04. Discover it here
6. ‘Netflix and Mask’
Postpartum, chances are, now that your little bundle has arrived you’re hitting the sofa on a Friday night rather than the town. Make this chill out time work hard for your hair by indulging in a treatment - such as the Redken Extreme Megamask while you scroll through your TV listings. By boosting the strength and integrity of thinning hair it will prevent further damage.
7. Signature Style
When it comes to styling, the must-haves for a woman going through postpartum hair thinning are Redken thickening lotion 06 says Larry King. “This really adds depth. If you're really thinning, powders are a great idea too - these add fibres to the hair that can make it look thicker and disguise signs of the scalp showing through. Try Redken Texture Powder Grip 03”
8. Avoid The Pony/ Top Knot
Lots of mums rely on the trusty top knot as it's baby-proof but it's in fact probably the style that shows off hair thinning the most, Larry King Redken UK style ambassador “It all really depends where the thinning is worse. I tend to find that women lose it around the hairline the most, which often leaves you with a crown of baby hair. In that instance, a topknot might not be the best option so wearing it down around the face will disguise it more if it's something that you’re conscious of.”
9. You Time
Try to take some time out for yourself and book in for some pampering at your nearest Redken salon. Even if it’s a quick blow-dry so you don’t have to wash your hair for once, it will boost your confidence and get you and your hair looking and feeling like your old self. If you can’t get a babysitter, don’t worry about taking the baby with you; salons are a great place for little ones. On tap white noise from hairdryers and lots of willing arms for cuddles means baby will be kept occupied while mummy gets her glam on.

HOW TO DISGUISE THINNING HAIR
What is hair thinning?
Hair thinning is the result of a process called hair miniaturisation. This is when the hair starts to thin progressively until eventually the hair follicle stops producing hair at all. Whilst it can affect everyone, it is more common as you get older and affects men and women slightly differently. Male hair thinning will follow a fairly set pattern; either starting at the temples and working backwards, or beginning at the crown and spreading outwards. In women there tends to be less of a pattern and can be spread over a bigger area in a less consistent manner.
Why does hair thinning happen?
Lots of factors are at play for why hair thinning can occur in both men and women. It can be linked to change in hormone levels, genetics, stress, ethnicity, nutrient deficiencies or can also be due to underlying medical problems. For women, a change in hormone levels postpartum can also contribute towards thinning hair.
What can you do about thinning hair?
If you can’t pinpoint why your hair is thinning, it’s always best to seek medical advice first. Then, work with your Redken stylist on a cut and style that will make the most of your hair. “If you are a man experiencing male pattern baldness you should always talk to your stylist about your concerns. They'll be able to see it anyway so talk to them about adjusting your style accordingly. On men I always keep the hair line softer, which can disguise the tell-tale signs and then going short once it gets really thin.” Says Larry King Redken UK style ambassador
It’s also time to give your hair some extra TLC. Thinning hair is fragile and prone to breaking so try and avoid being too vigorous with it. For women cut down on things like backcombing, the frequency you’re using heated styling tools and even avoiding certain styles like really tight and high ponytails and top knots as these put a lot of pressure on the hairline.
Can products make a difference to thinning hair?
Yes they can! The Redken Cerafill Defy system has been designed for thinning hair, it has been shown to plump up each hair strand by 9% after just two applications*. Then there is the Redken Cerafill Retaliate that contains ceramide, menthol and a unique ingredient called SP-94 and is designed for people with more advanced thinning. Whilst the Redken Cerafill Dense FX Spray gets to work even faster and creates instantly thicker looking hair after just one use thanks to wonder ingredient, Filoxane, which deposits onto the hair fibre to instantly bulk it up. However it’s also about using products with longer term gains. By using a conditioning treatment like Redken Extreme Strength Builder, once or twice a week continually, you will help strengthen hair from future damage.
Is hair thinning reversible?
This really depends on why your hair is thinning. If you have postpartum hair thinning then once your hormones have returned to normal levels, the amount of hair you are shedding will stabilise and any patches of hair that have thinned out may return to what they once were. Otherwise, products alone cannot make new hairs grow but they can make existing hairs look thicker and fuller.

What causes dandruff?
Malassezia globose is the main cause of dandruff. This is bought about by an imbalance of bacteria and yeast. It feeds on natural scalp oils which are needed to keep the scalp moisturised and healthy. As the oils are broken down oleic acid is formed.1 in 2 people are sensitive to oleic acid and the scalp responds by becoming inflamed, irritated and itchy and reacts by shedding the skin leading to visible flaking.
Dandruff can worsen due to external factors such as heat or dry air, stress, product build up, pollution or internal factors such as a hormone imbalance. Dandruff effects around 50% of the UK adult population*, with men under the age of 35 citing dandruff as their primary hair concern.
Key symptoms of dandruff include white flakes in the hair and on the shoulders, itching, tightness and redness.Although totally harmless, dandruff can greatly affect the confidence of those who suffer from it and be a source of embarrassment.
What is the best Anti-Dandruff Treatment?
Before going down the medicated route a sufferer of dandruff should look to try an over the counter shampoo with a key anti-dandruff ingredient. Some known anti-dandruff ingredients include selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, sulfur, coal tar and zinc pyrithione. Whilst a few of these anti-dandruff ingredients can only temporarily address the physical symptoms of dandruff, Zinc pyrthione is clinically proven to address both the physical symptoms such as flaking, inflammation and irritation as well as go straight to the cause and prevent dandruff from re- occurring.
Redken Brews Anti-Dandruff shampoo for men contains zinc pyrithione to help relieve the effects of dandruff and stop it from re-occuring, and lavender oil, known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits on the skin. Both ingredients work together to offer an effective and lasting anti-dandruff solution! For best results use twice a week. Apply evenly to scalp, leave on for several minutes, and then rinse off.

We asked salon of the month Live True what red hair they are being asked for in salons and why you should take the plunge and dye your hair red this autumn.
What do you love about doing red shades in the salon on clients?
Red is a wonderful colour to wear. It brightens up your features, adds extra shine to your hair and will also bring some warmth to your life. On some skin complexion, red colours will also show an extra glow. Autumn is the perfect season for reds.
Red attracts the light more than any other colours do, it will give clients a shine boost naturally and the hair will look more voluminous.
At Live True, we are fans of reds. It is always a happy challenge to create a red color on someone. There is a lot to play with and we can always plan a little twist in the techniques so that it looks different every time. For those shy to vivid reds, we can incorporate this through a soft balayage to make the look easier to wear.
What do you find most of your clients are asking for in salon? In color and style?
From warm browns to strawberry blondes going through intensely vivid red, there is a perfect shade for everyone.
A lot of our clients are requesting mahogany, natural browns with a red tone accentuated with intense red balayage and vivid reds mixed with warm colors created using a red palette.
Reds go with every style, natural curls to edgy haircuts, this colour magnifies any hairstyle desired.
What are the biggest red hair trends and shades you are seeing right now? And what do you think of Redken’s newest SEQ red shades?
The Shade EQ reds are best used after a lightening service. It’s easy to incorporate those luminous red tones into a Live True London Balayage to get your color to a new level of intensity. Our color experts can incorporate the three new Shade EQ reds into panels through the hair. Lighter shades can be placed around the face to ensure that the features attract light. We love using Shade EQ as this color leaves the hair feeling healthy and strong.
Redken has added to their portfolio the most beautiful permanent red colour with new Redken Color Gels. The intensity and purity of the color with Gels is incredible. The Gels are a more premium colouring product and we are able to achieve more lift and blending with these.
What products are the best to use for protecting the color?
In order to maintain vibrant, beautiful red, special thought needs to be placed on aftercare.
It is crucial to stay away from strongly cleansing shampoos such as anti-dandruff. Some moisturising shampoos, conditioners and masks aren’t advised either as they will open the cuticles and allow the red pigments to leave the hair more quickly.
Redken Colour Extend Magnetics is the best range for anyone that needs to lock the red pigments inside their hair. In this range, shampoo, conditioner and mask combined will keep you safe for weeks. And the plus, the Colour Extend Magnetics shampoo is sulfate-free! The One United spray is an all-rounder product that will protect your hair from breakage, act as a barrier against heating tools, is safe for all colour treated hair, will control frizz and fly-away and has in total 25 benefits. All of those are available to be purchased in any Live True London salon.
What do you recommend to your clients to help them with this?
For those that wear intensely vibrant reds, the commitment to your colour will have to be going up a level. As well as using the right aftercare, we would advise to return for a toner in between your full colour services. This is where the brand-new Shade EQ Gloss red will play an important part. Your colourist will be able to refresh your tone and therefore prolong the vivacity of the red.
What’s the biggest challenge clients will face when it comes to maintaining their red color and keeping it healthy?
The biggest challenge that we encounter as colorists is that to maintain a red colour to its vibrant state, the client must have their hair in good condition. If your hair is too porous or too sensitised, the red pigments won’t attach themselves to the hair, and they will leave quicker than you expected. If your dream color is red and you have been blonde for years or you have been using high heating tools to style your hair; the best advise is to go first for a consultation with your colorist so that they can assess your hair and recommend the best way to rebuild the condition and strength so that the color sits on a great canvas.

We asked Claire from Wigs and Warpaint, Sheffield our salon of the month to share with us her glossing secrets from our recent Shake Your Shades campaign shoot
What does a hair gloss do to your hair?
Why I used a hair gloss
Our model Bethany’s target was a creamy not too cool but not too warm smudged blonde hair color. Something to brighten her up, she is a chameleon and loves paying with hair color. Bethany wanted an expensive glossy looking blonde which is why we chose Shades EQ hair gloss.
How do you prep the hair ready for a hair gloss service?
There was work to be done on Bethany’s hair as we had quite a few different areas to work on, some banding was needed from previous hair colouring. A global bleached technique had been used before and we wanted to brake this up with a mix of balayage face framing and baby lights. Redken Blondage shampoo and conditioner was used to pre tone before the service.
The technique behind a hair gloss
Once I had placed the foils heavier on the balayage around the face (top tip take diagonal back sections and elevate the sections up and slightly back to help with the blend ) place in foil to enable you to apply Shades EQ to brake the global color up.
The amazing thing about Shades EQ is that it only works on the areas of hair that have been colored, making it a go to product for so many when you are wanting to let a natural hair color grow down and need to apply hair colour on the zones 2 and 3 without effecting the root color.
There was no shattering the undertone and hot roots here. Shades EQ 07Na plus processing solution was applied on the sections. I left out some to the ends. I processed the color and then applied Shades EQ 09Na with clear 1:1. The beauty of Shades EQ is how you leave it in to process for 20 minutes with confidence and the longevity is second to none, with it being an acidic colour. The shine is a real difference to most other toners and colors.
I love that Bethany chose to go for this hair color and tone as I was itching to use the new Shades EQ Natural Ash shades, they are perfect for keeping the brightness and giving a slight neutralising effect
What to use after a hair gloss service
Shades EQ was used all over the hair, a go to for all fellow stylists. It’s a massive time saver and great to retail to hair color clients. PH Bonder was used for my insurance. This was added into the color and processed as normal. Redken One United was used to protect and Condition the hair. With is 25 benefits in one bottle it is a must for all stylists to use.
How to style hair after a hair gloss
Redken Stay High mousse is my favourite product for bounce, hold and smoothing effect.
Redken Hot sets is the best to protect hair and give hold. It lets me brush out the styling product but leaves a bounce and curl. Redken Wax blast for those stubborn flyaway stray hairs, a hot tip it to spray into your hands then apply, its softer and great to stop static.
What are your favourite hair gloss shades?
My favourite products are the Shades EQ P and V shades. I love how good they are at staying on the hair and of course the shine that they offer. My customers love them and notice the gloss and shine straight away. Redken Stay High is the best mousse by far for all hair types but definitely curly hair, I should know as I have been on the hunt all my life to hold my curls so well and defined.

Redken breaks down the most frequently asked questions about thinning hair and hair loss
How does hair thin?
Hair grows in three cycles. Anagen is the actively growing phase, and hair spends 5-7 years in this stage. Then, it transitions through what is called catagen phase, which lasts 3 weeks, to the resting or telogen phase, which lasts 3 months.
Think of your hair follicles as little workhorses. You want them to spend as much time in the anagen phase as possible. However with male and female pattern hair loss, the follicles become lazy. They want to spend more and more time resting in telogen and less time growing in anagen. As the time hairs spend in anagen shortens, hair may appear to shed more. This is because the hairs are essentially turning over more rapidly.
There is another important difference in the quality of the new hairs. Instead of being as thick as the previous hairs, they are being replaced by thinner, finer versions of themselves. This is a process called miniaturisation. The combined result is then two-fold—not only are the hairs less thick, but they stay in the actively growing phase for shorter periods of time. As the owner of these hairs, you are getting less and less bang for your buck!
Without any treatment, male and female pattern hair loss can be chronic and progressive. This means that the hairs will continue to thin and that the amount of time they are in the actively growing phase will continue to shorten. Overall hair density, which refers to both the thickness of hairs, as well as the number of hairs per square centimeter, will diminish.
How does hair thin so quickly?
The rate of thinning is difficult to predict. Some may present with a rapid thinning over 6-12 months, while others may develop thinning slowly over a decade or more. This is also determined largely by genetics. For many people, their hair loss is unmasked by some major physiologic event such as having a baby or going on a crash diet
How often should I wash my hair? Won’t washing more often make it fall out more?
You should wash the hair often enough to prevent the buildup of dandruff or oily residue. People at the early stages of male or female pattern hair loss are often afraid to wash their hair, because each time the manipulation of the hair seems to result in more fallout. What’s important to realise is that once you begin therapy (topical minoxidil) the shedding should improve, regardless of how often you wash your hair. It is actually better to optimise scalp hygiene in order to remove sebum and help improve the penetration of the topical minoxidil.
Can wearing a hat make hair loss worse?
No, there is no evidence that wearing a hat will worsen hair loss. In fact, if you suffer from thinning hair, it is a great idea to wear a hat. This protects your scalp from unwanted ultraviolet light that may cause pre-cancers (actinic keratoses) or skin cancers (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma) on the scalp. Men and women with thinning hair are already at an increased risk of skin cancer on their pate because they have less coverage to protect their skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.
What is the difference between hair thickening products and products designed for hair growth?
Hair thickening products coat the hair shaft directly, and can result in an instant increase in volume and fullness. These products will help to instantly increase the volume of the hair. Hair growth products are applied to the scalp, where they send a molecular signal directly to the hair follicle. It takes many months of continuous use to affect the hairs as they grow out.
How can I tell if these products are working for me?
The first sign will be a decrease in the amount of hair shedding after the first 3-6 months of use. It may be helpful for you to take baseline and standardized photographs to document your progress.
lass hair is the latest hair trend to take over Instagram and with Redken Shades EQ and Color Gels, it’s never been easier for you to get your glass hair.
Instagram is the place to see the newest and hottest celebrity trends, it was hard to miss the glass hair trend worn by Kim Kardashian, Hailey Baldwin, Bella Hadid and a host of other hair influencers.
WHAT IS GLASS HAIR?
The latest trend to go from the ‘gram to the real world is #glasshair – hair with mirror-like shine, preferably paired with a blunt bob and super-sleek styling. It’s a sharp haircut that’s styled to smooth, polished, shiny perfection. Essentially hair that looks like it was cut from glass.
HOW CAN YOU GET GLASS HAIR?
With Redken, it’s easier than ever to emulate this trend thanks to Shades EQ and new Color Gels and Redkens styling range, between them, there’s a solution for every client – from vibrant colour queens to natural beauties.
HOW CAN I GET THE SHINE FOR GLASS HAIR?
With Redken Shades EQ, you can achieve unbeatable glossy shine, unlike anything in the market. Even results are guaranteed, no matter how porous or damaged the hair is. And with ultimate colour flexibility, results are personalised for each client. “I don’t know what I did before Shades EQ,” says Redken Global Colour Creative Director, Josh Wood. “It’s been a total game-changer for me.”
Shades EQ offers demi-permanent colour without lifting the hair, making it perfect for toning, refreshing or correcting colour. With no ammonia, the gel formula respects the integrity of the hair and adds 100% more shine than before colouring for the glossiest A-list results.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT WITH COLOR GELS?
New Color Gel Lacquers provide high-saturation colour, with a permanent liquid lacquer shine. The low-ammonia formula combines advanced technology with exceptional, lasting results, adding unbeatable gloss and shine and achieving up to four levels of lift.
Available in 45 shades, as well as clear, Color Gels pair perfectly with Shades EQ Gloss for a quick and healthy colour refresh – and incredible shine between permanent color appointments. And, thanks to the shorter processing time, clients can be in and out of the salon quicker than before.
We're not going to say the glass hair trend will be the easiest to recreate at home (you’ve got to commit to a blunt-cut bob or lob, first), but if you want a new look, grab some shine spray like Redken’s Shine Flash 02 some or shine serum like Redken’s anti frizz polishing cream Outshine 01, your round brush, and get glassing.

What do you love about the silver and grey hair trend?
I love how striking the silvery grey hair trend is. How every grey colour is different and creative. Every person has a different shade of grey.
Do you think silver hair is a hair trend that can work for all ages?
Absolutely; it’s a hair colour that has a high fashion statement for younger people, and for the more mature client with a case of ‘salt & pepper’ tones, it gives a much cleaner, modern and youthful look, without being harsh and still embracing their grey hair. As long as it compliments the individuals skin tone, eye colour and/ or style in general, it can work for any one of any age which is what makes it such a versatile and striking look.
What do you find most of your clients are asking for in salon? In colour and style?
Most of our clients are asking for balayage for blonde natural hair or bleach and tone with 90% wanting to go ashier silver or white.
What’s the biggest challenge clients with grey hair face when it comes to maintaining it and keeping it healthy?
Getting the right amount of protein and moisture. Protein to prevent it becoming weak and moisture for giving shine and getting rid of frizz. The other problem can be if a client is using too much purple/silver shampoo which can make the hair muddy and some times even green. Finally, an additional issue is toners fading and becoming dull, so there is the upkeep for clients to bare in mind.
What do you recommend to your clients to help them with this?
For weaker hair clients that want to have a perfect balance of condition and tone, the combination of Color Extend Blondage shampoo and conditioner, and Extreme Anti-snap are great. For the naturally grey haired client, and those who’s hair is chemically treated, frizzy and dull I recommend them to use Color Extend Graydiant shampoo and Color Extend Graydiant conditioner for brightening and nourishing the hair.
For the upkeep of the tone, in addition to the toning shampoo and conditioner, I recommend that they visit between services for a toner top up.
What products are the best to use for protecting the hair colour and combating the natural wiry texture that comes with grey hair?
Pillow Proof Express Primer and One United are brilliant pre-blowdry primers for coloured hair, and Align 12, combined with Diamond Oil Glow Dry is a perfect combo for smoothing and softening the natural wiry texture of those with grey hair.
What do you think of Redken’s newest launch Color Extend Graydiant designed for people with silver/grey hair?
More and more clients are choosing to embrace their grey hair, they don’t want to cover it with tint or highlights and we see more and more young people asking for metallic silver hair that they see on their favourite celebrities like Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and Lady Gaga and all over social media. The launch of Color Extend Graydiant is perfect for those clients to brighten and nourish grey hair while keeping it manageable.
